One year and 3 months since the low-key launch of this site as “just another expat blog”, we’ve had some great growth, thanks to our many loyal readers, Facebook, Google+, and Twittter followers, and resulting top search rankings on queries about living in Uruguay.
What we have yet to do, is give you, and really, ourselves, Mark Mercer (me) and Lisa Marie Mercer, the co-owners, and co-explorers on this next step of our adventure, all the reasons we’re here. Here in Uruguay, and here in this part of the web. Nor been as clear as we perhaps should to ourselves, on where we hope to go next in this journey.
I’m ramping this up, in part because I’ve decided to join in Suitcase Entrepreneur Natalie Sisson’s new “30 Day Blog Challenge” – I came across it today 6 August (ok, “yesterday”) and it’s just the kick-in-butt I need to take this to the next level. Maybe the same for your blog, your location-independent or choose-your-homeland adventure too!
So that’s my task this month – in essence, writing the Uruguay Expat Life Manifesto and living it by launching into deeper waters. Stay tuned for our plans and our “past through tomorrow”, to paraphrase Robert A Heinlein.
- Reboot our lives in a new locale.
- Find a new country whose values align more with our own.
- Have fun.
- Not accept the no-win scenario.
- Oh, and make some money at it…
So far, number 5 has been almost entirely off-site (freelance writing and web work from visibility and authority earned here), and only indirectly related to our Uruguay Expat Life / Uruguay for Me site network itself. That’s going to change. We promise you we’ll still have plenty of free, from the heart and soul and opinionated snarky minds, commentary, assistance, guidance, inspiration. But we’re going to start organizing a lot of our material into a long-hinted, never-yet-delivered, ebook, plus additional info, for reasonable fees. You’ll also notice a big step-up in marketing and work from our Southern Cross Web and Social Marketing business, which we launched only a few months ago, already building two site networks for expat-owned businesses. We’ve been using a “Clients First!” philosophy, but need to make sure we’re not the “shoemaker’s children” ourselves. So our beta.southerncrossweb.com preview/placeholder has to become a rich, operational, content-filled, business-driving site, along with its related social marketing. (Some of which you may have seen on my personal Facebook timeline already in the past day or so.)
We’re going to get digging into really building up our “referral” part of the “referral and information services” we talk about sometimes. We’ve helped connect some of you looking for places to rent or stay, with others who have that to offer.
As well, better present the “information” part of it as a searchable, easily-discoverable resource., rather than that just being things embedded in a year’s history of blog posts. We’ve helped explain some of the complexities of residency documents. Helped people realize that Uruguay has a well-regarded three-tier system of Universal Health Care, not the “it’s either public or private”, or “expat insurance” flawed information that so many other sites give – not from malice, but from lack of on-the-ground observation and solid analytical skills – two things we do have!
My goal – the start of Southern Springtime, September 21, to have our ebook for sale, have at least the start of a formal referral and advice network going, and have that launching on our related brand, “Uruguay For Me“. UruguayFor.Me already is live, but just as a redirect to this site for now. Look for new info and content coming there, while UruguayExpat.Info continues to be exactly what the URL itself promises!
